Toronto, Ontario … Hummingbird Centre for the Performing Arts proudly presents ALKA YAGNIK & BABUL SUPRIYO on Sunday June 29th, 2003 at 7 p.m. Two names instantly recognizable in the world of Bollywood films, the voices behind the music will perform with musicians in an evening emceed by comedian SHAKEEL ANSARI.
ALKA YAGNIK is a Bollywood singer often referred to as the reigning queen of Hindi film music. She was born in Calcutta, the daughter of a classical singer, and developed her talent through school and college under the guidance of her mother. She moved to Bombay, the hub of the Indian cinema industry, and gained recognition as a playback singer with the unforgettable rendition of the 1980s hit, “Ek do teen”, from the blockbuster movie Tezaab. She went on to sing for such super hits like Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, Akele Hum Akele Tum, Deewana, Baazigar, Karan Arjun, Criminal, Raja Hindustani, Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke, Refugee and many more.
BABUL SUPRIYO hails from a prestigious musical family in West Bengal. Since early childhood, he was extensively trained by his grandfather, noted composer Banikantha N.C. Baral. He left his bank job and migrated to Bombay in November 1992 to pursue his love of singing. Today he is regarded as the most promising young playback singer in the Bollywood film industry.
ALKA YAGNIK & BABUL SUPRIYO have managed to carve out niches for themselves in this highly competitive field of playback singing. They are recognized both at home and internationally, as respected and talented artists who are shaping and redefining the Indian entertainment industry.
Hummingbird Centre also proudly presents renowned sarod player AMJAD ALI KHAN on Saturday November 1st, 2003 at 8 p.m., performing with his two sons, AMAAN ALI BANGASH & AYAAN ALI BANGASH, hosts of Sa Re Ga Ma as aired on ATN-Zee TV.

AMJAD ALI KHAN is a regular performer at Carnegie Hall, Royal Albert Hall, Royal Festival Hall, Kennedy Center, Santury Hall (First Indian performer), House of Commons, St. James Palace and the Opera House in Australia. He has performed in numerous international music festivals including the WOMAD Festival in Adelaide and New Plymouth, Edinburgh Music Festival, World Beat Festival in Brisbane, Summer Arts Festival in Seattle, Shiraz Festival, and many more.
AMJAD ALI KHAN has the privilege of achieving the kinds of honours and citations for which many other artists would have taken a lifetime. He is a recipient of the UNESCO Award, Padma Vibhushan (Highest Indian civilian award), Unicef's National Ambassadorship, The Crystal Award by the World Economic Forum and Honorary Doctorates from the Universities of York, England, Delhi University and the Vishva Bharti (Deshikottam) in Shantiniketan. He has represented India in the first World Arts Summit in Venice, received Honorary Citizenship to the States of Texas, Massachusetts, Tennessee and the city of Atlanta. April 20th, 1984 was cleared as “Amjad Ali Khan Day” in Boston, Massachusetts. In 1995, Mr. Khan awarded the Gandhi UNESCO Medal in Paris for his composition Bapukauns.
His collaborations include a piece composed for the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Yoshikazu Fukumora titled Tribute to Hong Kong. BBC Magazine voted his recent CD entitled „Bhairav‟ among the “Best 50 classical albums of the world” for the year 1995. In 1999, AMJAD ALI KHAN inaugurated the World Festival of Sacred Music with His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
AMJAD ALI KHAN is a man who has proven his indomitable belief in the integration of two of life's greatest forces, love and music. He is a living example of a man who practices that integration each day of his life, both on stage and off stage.
The SAROD is a relatively young instrument compared to the other instruments of India. It is a present day modification of the rabab, a folk instrument from Central Asia. This modification took place in India by Ghulam Badegi Khan Bangash, who is one of AMJAD ALI KHAN‟s ancestors. The body of the sarod is made of teakwood, has a steel fingerboard and a belly covered with goatskin. Over this are placed 19 metal strings, out of which 11 are sympathetic ones, and the plectrum is made of coconut shell called „java‟. The strings are pressed with the edge of the nails and not the fingertips, which gives a very fine tone that suits the character of this instrument. The Senia Bangash School of music has produced great stalwarts like Nanne Khan, Asghar Ali Khan, Hafiz Ali Khan, Ahemad Ali Khan and of course AMJAD ALI KHAN who is training his disciples and his sons AMAAN & AYAAN to carry forward this tradition.
